Introduction
Campaign Rituals, escalating boss chains and Tribute rewards: learn the Forbidden Rites encounter loop.
What is Forbidden Rites?
Understand the reward choices
Tribute is your encounter budget
Tribute is earned by defeating the revived monsters. Favours are the items offered in exchange. Buying an item, rerolling the selection and deferring a reward all compete for that resource; opening the reward window does not mean you can take everything.
A deferred item is not delivered immediately
Deferral pays part of an item’s cost so it can be offered again later. WDguide advice: check whether a cheap immediate equipment upgrade is more useful than committing your Tribute to a future purchase.
Party rewards have their own rules
In 0.5.5, party members can earn Tribute and receive a personal, limited reward selection. That party-member selection cannot be rerolled. Do not assume every player sees the map owner’s reward options.
The Wildwood connection
Sacred Blooms
Forbidden Rites adds @Sacred Bloom as a possible Ritual reward. It brings the Viridian Wildwood to a cluster of Atlas maps; it is not a guaranteed reward for completing a campaign altar.
Collect wisps, then face empowered monsters
Inside the Wildwood, follow and gather wisps. After you leave, the collected wisps affect monsters in the map, increasing both their power and rewards. This is the endgame extension of the league, separate from the campaign boss chains.
Other systems changed by 0.5.5
Resume a Trial of Chaos
The Trial can be left and resumed at the same room. Reward chests now appear after each room; the completion pool focuses on Currency and Soul Cores rather than Corrupted equipment. Check the next room before continuing a long run.
Expedition beyond the original league
Farrow and Expedition enter the core campaign and Atlas. Outside the original Runes of Aldur league, the Act 4 Runeseeker quest unlocks the Anvil. Do not follow the original league’s Act 1 unlock instructions in this version.
Reinspect Soul Cores
This patch changes several Soul Core effects and limits. An older saved item description may no longer describe the current effect. Inspect the augment on the intended equipment type before reusing an older build.
Complete a Ritual
- 01
Clear the circle
Kill monsters within the Ritual boundary to charge the altar. Leave yourself room to move before activating it.
- 02
Activate and survive
The altar revives the slain monsters. Defeat them again to earn Tribute, then inspect the available Favours.
- 03
Choose the reward
Spend Tribute on useful upgrades. Ordinary Ritual rewards can be rerolled at a Tribute cost or deferred for a partial payment. Read the options actually offered by the encounter.
Follow a boss cluster
- 01
Locate the Effigies
Look for the marked cluster on the World Map and prepare before starting its boss fights.
- 02
Expect the next fight to grow
Each defeated boss is carried into the next Ritual in that cluster, creating progressively harder waves.
- 03
Finish the chain
Completing the series lets you spend Tribute on Unique items. Recheck your equipment before committing to the next boss.
Rewards and preparation
Challenges
League challenges award cosmetics at 2, 4, 6 and 8 completions. The Totem records further challenge progress.
Useful reward planning
For regular Ritual Favours, compare the cost of buying an upgrade now with deferring an expensive reward. Rerolling also consumes Tribute.
Prepare the arena
WDguide advice: favour reliable recovery and movement over a small damage increase when repeated boss waves are your next obstacle.
Campaign and endgame are different
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not spend Tribute twice
Buying, rerolling and deferring compete for Tribute. WDguide advice: inspect the reward selection before committing to a reroll.
Prepare for the whole boss chain
Earlier bosses return in later Rituals in the cluster. WDguide advice: leave recovery and movement ready for the growing encounter.
Keep the Atlas step separate
@Sacred Bloom brings the Wildwood to connected Atlas maps. It is not the same encounter as a campaign boss Ritual.
Spend Tribute with a purpose
Buy a useful upgrade

WDguide example: your weapon is falling behind and a usable replacement is offered. Compare its requirements and cost before paying for another reroll. Currency such as has a different purpose from an immediate equipment upgrade; a reward being available is not a reason to use it now.
Save for a later offer

Deferral reserves an offered item for later rather than putting it in your inventory. Keep that decision separate from @Sacred Bloom, which adds Wildwood content to an Atlas map cluster. A campaign boss chain does not automatically unlock that map reward.
Enter the next boss with a plan
The next fight can include bosses already defeated in that cluster. WDguide advice: identify a movement route and recovery option before activating the encounter. The campaign chain and an ordinary map Ritual are different progression steps.
After the encounter
Your next step
Later 0.5.5 fixes worth knowing
If a Ritual would not start
Patch 0.5.5e fixed a case where killing certain bosses prevented Rituals from starting. Treat advice built around that bug as outdated. In party play, the 0.5.5 rules also require everyone in the area to hear Aoife’s introduction before starting the encounter.
Check deferred costs again
Patch 0.5.5c fixed deferred-item costs updating more than once in an area when Favours were rerolled. WDguide advice: read the cost actually shown before spending; an old screenshot is not a price promise.
Resume a Trial; inspect its rewards
The 0.5.5 Trial of Chaos can be left and resumed in the same room. Room-end chests reduce the risk of losing all rewards. WDguide advice: use a safe stopping point when your setup is struggling instead of assuming you must finish the whole run in one session.
