Start with an item worth improving
Choose the base
The base fixes the equipment type and starting properties. Inspect : changing its rarity does not turn it into a different weapon family. Check the level and attributes you can actually equip.
Name the upgrade you need
WDguide advice: decide whether this slot needs damage, Life, a resistance or an attribute before spending currency. Keep your working item while you develop a replacement.
Read the modifier pool
Explicit modifiers belong to prefix or suffix groups. Item type, item level and modifier restrictions affect what is available. A stronger tier and a higher number within one tier are different improvements; an open modifier slot does not guarantee your desired roll.
A simple Normal-to-Rare crafting path

Make the first modifier
Use on a Normal base to make it Magic with one random modifier. Inspect the result. WDguide advice: stop here if that modifier does nothing for your plan.

Add to a promising Magic item
adds a random modifier to an eligible Magic item. It does not let you choose Life or a specific resistance. Check the resulting modifiers before committing more.

Promote the item
turns the Magic item Rare and adds a random modifier. The upgrade is another decision point, not proof that the item is now better than the one you wear.

Finish only if the result is useful
adds a random modifier to an eligible Rare item. WDguide advice: compare the cost of another random attempt with keeping or replacing this item. You can stop before filling every slot.
Another route: start with four modifiers
upgrades a Normal or Magic item to Rare with four random modifiers. This is an alternative starting route; it is not the same operation as adding one modifier to your existing Rare item.
Choose a stopping point
WDguide advice: after each operation, check whether the item solves the original problem. Do not spend your remaining currency only because you have already invested in the base.
Finish the correct slot
A socket is not an affix
@Artificer's Orb adds an Augment Socket to eligible equipment. Runes and Soul Cores use these equipment sockets; skill supports use the skill's support sockets instead.
One rune, different effects
Inspect . Its ordinary armour effect grants Fire resistance, while a martial weapon receives added Fire damage. Wand/staff and Bonded lines are separate conditions; do not add every line to the same item.
Corruption is a separate decision
changes an item unpredictably and makes it Corrupted. Most ordinary crafting methods then become unavailable. WDguide advice: finish the planned ordinary crafting first and keep a replacement for any indispensable item.
A practical armour upgrade check

Before spending
WDguide example: your next area exposes a Fire-resistance gap. Choose an equippable armour base and retain the current piece; higher damage elsewhere will not fix that defensive gap.

Before equipping
Inspect the actual finished item and applicable augment effect. Compare the whole setup: Life, all resistances and attributes. A Fire upgrade can still remove the Dexterity needed by your weapon.

Before a risky final operation
WDguide advice: keep the functional setup and test the replacement in a separate planner stage. The planner records an intended result; it does not perform crafting or promise the same rolls in game.
